My Emma has been struggling a bit at school this year. We are not really sure what is going on but she went from loving school to hating it this year. I am bothered by the fact that, although I do see some of the teachers concerns, they are not at the same level as she is observing. The thing that I am afraid the most of is that it will start affecting her academically.
I have tried working with her at home, but without much teaching skills or guidance I was not really sure how to help. So when I had the opportunity to try Reading Eggs, I was very excited! It has been less then a week now since we started but it has armed me with so much information.
First thing we did when we started was have her take a test to see where her level was. Emma started at lesson 62. I think that would fall in line with Kindergarten since it stated she was at a 5.25 reading age. We then headed over to start some lessons. I knew she was excited to try this but with her not liking school this year and getting frustrated I didn't know how long she would last. Well she finished 2 lessons and then wondered around the site and worked on other things. She worked for over an hour and then came back after dinner and worked on it till bedtime. Since Saturday she has completed 3 whole lessons and passed 7 driving tests. She has also gone up to a 5.5 reading age.
The one thing that I really like about Reading eggs, opposed to other programs we tried is that this is real learning. They make it fun but she was never "playing". Everything she did was geared for her to learn. I was very amazed how eager she was and how excited she is to complete these lessons. It has really been great for me to be able to watch her work. I can now see for myself how much she knows and where she may need work on. I am excited to see where she progresses in the next few months and happy to have something for her to work on during summer break. I am also really excited to try the new MathSeeds as soon as that is available.
